From Persecutor to Challenger
Believing in and living from our Creator essence is not a passive way of being—it asks much of us. It asks that we bring light into darkness, tell the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, and stay awake to what is real rather than turning away in fear or denial.
The Challenger role in TED* (*The Empowerment Dynamic) is the active, catalytic energy that brings our Creator essence into form. It is the part of us that invites growth and calls forth authenticity in ourselves and others.
When we awaken our Challenger energy, we transform the instinct to fight or control into the capacity to expand and grow. We become truth tellers rather than accusers, catalysts for growth rather than for control or domination. This is not about being confrontational—it’s about being authentic.
The Challenger energy within the TED* framework has two dimensions. The first is the inner Challenger—our personal authority that invites honest self-reflection. It asks, “Where am I avoiding the truth about myself?” and “Where am I avoiding responsibility?” and encourages us to confront limiting beliefs, habits, or fears that keep us reactive. This inner work builds integrity and self-trust—the foundation for authentic influence.
The second dimension is the outer Challenger, expressed in our relationships and leadership. Here we use our clarity to question assumptions, hold others accountable, and call forth their best, without blame or judgment. When these two dimensions align, our inner authority supports our outer effectiveness. The Challenger essence is grounded, with an inner strength. It is not reactive or superior. When we live from this essence, we have no need to dominate or fix others. Instead, we trust the capacity within each person and situation to unfold toward its own potential. We simply name what we see, knowing that truth itself is a liberating force.
Many people mistake the Challenger for being harsh or confrontational. Yet when expressed in essence, the Challenger’s energy helps create clarity. It doesn’t attack—it reveals. The true Challenger offers truth as a mirror, not as a weapon.
The Greek term for “adversary” or “accuser” is diabolos, which is also the root of the word devil. Throughout human history, this energy has symbolized the impulse to blame, to divide, and to see the world in rigid terms.
When we slip into the Persecutor role, one of the three roles in the Dreaded Drama Triangle (DDT), we are overtaken by that same adversarial energy. We:
- Feel safe and secure only when we can compete and win.
- Seek power, accomplishment, and success as proof of our worth.
- Crave certainty and efficiency to protect ourselves against confusion or vulnerability.
- Exert control over others or situations to reduce chaos and uncertainty.
- Live inside rigid beliefs of winners and losers, good and bad, black and white.
In this reactive state, our identity feels on the line. We become the “fighter” in the fight-or-flight mechanism, defending the fragile self we believe we must protect. The Persecutor’s anger and control are really fear in disguise—fear of powerlessness, insignificance, or loss of certainty.
Yet this fierce energy is not inherently wrong. It contains raw life force waiting to be transformed. When we bring awareness to this fire, it becomes the light that clarifies rather than divides. The reactive fighter becomes the constructive Challenger—one who uses truth to build up rather than tear down.
If we can look at the Persecutor—whether a person, a condition, or a circumstance—as something that has come into our lives to challenge us to grow and develop, then what once felt like an adversary becomes a teacher.
Our Challenger essence acts as an inner truth-teller—a steady witness who helps us face and integrate our more difficult emotions. It’s the part of us willing to look honestly at our judgments, anger, and need to be right without collapsing into shame. The Challenger doesn’t suppress the darkness; it integrates it, transforming that raw energy into clarity, courage, and compassion.
As we do this inner work, the core coaching question to support the shift from Persecutor to Challenger is:“What is my intention?”This single inquiry invites a profound inner shift. The Persecutor’s unconscious intention is to protect, control, or win. The Challenger’s conscious intention is to clarify, awaken, and serve growth.
By pausing to ask this question, you move from reaction to reflection. You will shift from trying to prove something to revealing something. When your intention is grounded in respect and truth, even difficult feedback or firm boundaries become acts of service.
When you cultivate your Challenger energy you will meet challenges with curiosity and respect, the same energy that once divided becomes the spark that drives learning and positive change. Your Challenger energy is courageous, bold and has the power to transform.
Until next time, here’s to the Creator in you.
