The other night, a friend and I were watching a romantic comedy. It wasn’t a profound movie—just light, entertaining, and easy to enjoy.
But in the middle of it, there was a moment that stayed with us.
Two young adults, who had just met, were talking about what they feared most.
The man said he had always feared germs and was a bit of a germophobic. The woman said her deepest fear was losing her dog, whom she had loved since she was a little girl.
It was a simple exchange. Nothing especially deep. And yet after the movie ended, my friend and I found ourselves continuing the conversation. We asked each other, What do you fear most? What began casually opened into something unexpectedly deep. As we talked, both of us found our way to a fear underneath many other fears—an old, quiet fear that says: I am not worthy. That conversation stayed with me because it touched something profound. I have written before on similar subjects such as “I Am Enough” and “Ending the War Within”. But the more I reflected upon worthiness, I realized it comes from an even deeper place. It reaches beneath success, beneath approval, beneath whether we are doing life “well.”“Enough” often sounds like measurement.
Have I done enough?
Am I good enough?
Have I reached my life goals?
Worthiness is different.
Worthiness is not a measure. It is not a reward. It is not something handed out by others based on how pleasing, useful, accomplished or successful we are. Worthiness is a spiritual truth. It is part of our essential nature. It touches the very core of what it means to be human. And yet we question our worthiness.
Many of us spend years trying to answer that question by proving ourselves. We work harder. We help more. We achieve more. We become indispensable. We strive to be admired, chosen, needed, or good. But no amount of striving can heal the doubt and judgement created by forgetting who we truly are.
Because worthiness is not something we need to live up to. It is something we need to remember. A few questions have become especially powerful for me as I reflect upon my worthiness:· What makes me feel/think that I am unworthy?· By what standard do I measure this?· In whose eyes am I judged? By family, society, peers, my frightened younger self?
When I reflect upon these questions not from a narrative that my thinking mind creates, but from my wiser heart presence, I experience a more profound spiritual truth.
From a spiritual perspective, worthiness is not earned. It is given with life itself. At our core we are all Creators, imbued with an eternal, unchangeable sacred essence.
This is one of the reasons The Empowerment Dynamic (TED*) has been such a meaningful path for me. TED* gives me more than a model. It gives me a spiritual practice I can return to time and time again. When I slip into Victim, I forget my wholeness and only focus on what is missing or wrong. When I move into Persecutor, I turn against myself or others. When I go into Rescuer, I may try to earn self-worth through being needed.
But TED* helps me to know my Creator essence is always here. It doesn’t come and go with external circumstances. And what I am slowly, humbly learning is this: worthiness is innate, eternal, and universal.
Not just mine. Everyone’s.
Creator is not about proving. Creator is about consciously aligning with what is most true. It is about remembering that I am not separate from the creative intelligence of the universe. From that place, I do not have to earn my worthiness. I can begin to live from it.
So when the old voice whispers: You are not enough. You are not lovable. You have not earned your place, I want to meet it now with a gentler and more powerful question:Unworthy in the eyes of whom? And then I will listen and hear the truer voice that has always been there all along.I am worthy.Until next time,Here’s to the Creator in you,DonnaRegister today for the TED* Foundations course!
